Sister Smalls was born in North, South Carolina on April 1,1934 to Birdie Binyard and Nelson Ward Schofield. She was predeceased by her parents, three siblings (her twin Aaron at six months of age) brothers Ward and Nelson as well as her sons, Bishop Jerome T. Edgerton, Sr, William Smalls and sister-in-law Vivian Baker. As a child, Anna Smalls was an active member of Mt.Hope A.M.E.Zion Church. She attended White Plains Elementary Public School, Greenburgh Middle School and graduated from White Plains High School. She obtained a bachelor’s of Arts from The College of New Rochelle. Sister Smalls married and birthed two sons, Isaiah Charles Schofield and Bishop Jerome T. Edgerton Sr. Her marriage to Rev. William Smalls created a family of eight, three daughters and one additional son. She leaves behind her loving husband Rev. William Smalls, her oldest son, Isaiah Charles Schofield, Sandra Barbery, Jacqueline Smalls and Sharon Williams. The son of Isaiah Charles Schofield, Manuel Schofield, the children of Bishop Jerome T. Edgerton Sr: Kendra Edgerton, Brian Edgerton, Pastor Akilah Edgerton, Jernee’ Edgerton, Minister Jerome T. Edgerton Jr. and the children of her daughters Sandra and Sharon: Marcel, Jesse, Reginald, Charlene and Michelle and the daughter of William Smalls, Brook Smalls. Additionally, she leaves her cousins: Edward Furtick, Katrina Wright, Eric and Douglas Payne, her God-daughter Elizabeth, daughter-in law Shirley Edgerton, 11 great grands, 2 great-great grandchildren, and a host of other relatives and friends. This accomplished and strong woman of God had a distinguished career as a Graphic Artist at IBM. She volunteered as a Girl Scout Leader, enjoyed Arts & Crafts, was the Past Worthy Matron of the Eastern Stars Chapter 44 and was a foster parent for years. Her active life included domestic and international travel with and without her grandchildren, sharing stories of her professional experiences at IBM, teaching business skills, empowering and changing the lives of young people to find purpose and become self-sufficient adults. She was the active, dedicated and beloved First Lady of St. James A.M.E. Zion, St. Thomas A.M.E. Zion , Franklin Street A.M.E. Zion and Naomi A.M.E. Zion Churches. She was a member of the W.H.O.M. Society, delegate to A.M.E.Zion Conferences, and a member of the Gospel and senior choirs. Her favorite scripture was John 14: verses1-3. 14 Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. 2 In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also. “A wife, a mother, a nana too, this is the legacy we have from you.”
